Summary

This edition comprises the surviving probate documents from the period 1601-50 for the parishes of Bishopwearmouth and Monkwearmouth in north-east England. They give a wealth of precise detail and important evidence for life at the time: for example, of the ninety-one individuals recorded here (twelve of them women), the documents reveal forty-five engaged in farming, ten in trades and crafts, and seven in maritime work, with seven gentlemen and a clerk in holy orders. They also provide numerous inventories detailing their household goods. The wills and inventories are edited here in full in the original spelling, with a glossary, introduction, notes and an index.
