Author Biography


George Augustine is a neuroscientist known for his work on presynaptic mechanisms of neurotransmitter release and his contributions to the development of optogenetics, a tool to control neural activity using light. He is a Professor of Neuroscience and Mental Health, and the Irene Tan Liang Kheng Chari Professor in Neuroscience at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Richard Mooney studies the neurobiology of hearing and communication, with special emphasis on the neural mechanisms of vocal learning, production and perception. He is the George Barth Geller Professor of Neurobiology, and Director of Graduate Studies and Faculty and Duke University.

Anthony-Samuel LaMantia researches the developmental mechanisms that build neural circuits required for distinct behaviors, investigating genetic, molecular, and cell biological analyses as well as assessment of neural circuit function and related behaviors. He is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Virgina Tech, and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech as well as in the Department of Pediatrics at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

David Fitzpatrick is the CEO and Scientific Director of the Max Planck Florida Institute. His scientific contributions have earned him international recognition as a leader in systems neuroscience, with a focus on the functional organization and development of neural circuits in the cerebral cortex - the largest and most complex area of the brain, whose functions include sensory perception, motor control, and cognition.

Leonard White studies the functional architecture of the visual cortex and the role of sensory experience in development. He is at Duke University where he serves as Associate Professor in Neurology, Associate Director of the Duke Institute for Brain Science, Director of Undergraduate Studies of Psychology and Neuroscience, among other positions.

Michael Platt studies how the brain makes decisions, specifically investigating the biological mechanisms that allow people and other animals to make decisions when the environment is ambiguous. He is the James S. Riepe University Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Pennsylvania.
