Excerpts

"You can only drive north on I-75 so many times before the billboard about a 'man-eating clam' entices you off the highway at exit 326 and into the parking lot of Sea Shell City. Inside the huge gift shop, between the rows of rubber tomahawks and other tacky souvenirs for tourists, is a 505-pound Giant Clam (Tridacna gigas) from the Philippines. This is reputed to be the largest mollusk in the world and 'has the capacity to snuff out a man's life with one sharp snap of its shells.' Reality is that theclam is a vegetarian that feasts on algae."
