Summary
When into Sean's world, through an innocent act of Merry's giving, falls a bizarre and frightening handwritten diary, bound in a dirty binder, old and tattered. The diary writer spins a nightmarish tale of a journey taken by two baseball players and a team follower of the Boston Beaneaters, in the evening of August 7, 1897.
Celebrating the team's 60th win of the season with a 4-2 home victory over the Baltimore Orioles, the three young men venture into the worst of the Boston slums to drink to their team's success. But what they ultimately encounter on that horrifying night is the personification of pure evil; it changes their lives forever, and it threatens the lives of others as well.
Reading the peculiar diary and all-consumed by the searing words of its unknown author, Sean too learns of what the men encountered on that ghastly and wickedly vile night of August 7, 1897. In horror and clinging to total disbelief, Sean struggles desperately to discredit the narrative as a clever yet perverse horror story by frantically researching the facts about the lives and times of the Boston Beaneaters ballplayers, and the fates they ultimately met.
For the sake of his own peace of mind that those he loves are safe, and for the salvation of his soul, Sean must prove the diary is a fake --and the cruel evil it portends--a work of darkest fiction.
