Author Biography

Shelby Foote, born in 1916, spent most of his childhood and early adult life in Greenville, Mississippi. He entered the University of North Carolina in 1935 and served in both the Army and the Marines during World War II. In the years following the war, he published the first five of six novels before beginning his three-volume The Civil War, A Narrative. A three-time Guggenheim Fellow, he has served as a lecturer at the University of Virginia and Memphis State University and was a consultant and participant in a popular television series on the Civil War. Mr. Foote is a member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters and The Fellowship of Southern Writers. He has made his home in Memphis, Tennessee, since 1953.
